Simon Tu

Nickname: Desi
PBs: 5km – 16:53, 10km – 35:24, Half – 1:16:38, Marathon – 2:55:07
Workplace: 2.5 km from the pillars.
Best Running Experience: Not long after I first started running I was back at work after a lunchtime run when suddenly a wave of euphoria rushed over me. For about an hour I walked around the office tripping out of my mind, loving everything, even the people I work with. I’m pretty much still chasing that high, until then I continue to hate work and everyone I encounter there.
Worst Running Experience: Needing to take a crap during a long run. Enough said.
Racing Shoes: Mizuno Sayonara’s
Years Running: 2013
Favourite Training Session: Mona
Hobbies: I’m a music nerd. For 20 years I presented music programs on 3PBS and over that time I collected over two thousand 12” and vinyl LPs. My collection started with house music and then moved to disco, to soul, to reggae and rare groove.
Biggest Dislike: People who talk about themselves but show no interest in listening in return.
Favourite Movie: Downfall (Der Untergang) – A schadenfreude classic, but don’t worry, they’re Nazis so they deserve it.
Favourite Music:
– House record – Isolée ‎– Beau Mot Plage (1997)
– Hip-Hop record Eric B. & Rakim ‎– Paid In Full (1987)
– Disco record – Marta Acuna – Dance Dance Dance (1977)
– Soul record – Odyssey – Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love (1972)
– Reggae record – Dennis Brown – Ghetto Girl (1977)
– Funk record – George McCrae – I Get Lifted (1974)
Favourite Food: Rice Vermicelli with those bright pink balls of pork.
Favourite Drink: Mountain Goat Summer Ale
Favourite Event: Run For The Firies. A local ‘barely breaking even’ 10km run.
Life Highlight: Bringing my newborns home.
Life low-point: Roughly six weeks after I’d brought by newborns home.
Favourite Quote: “I’m pretty disappointed. I could have run it harder, but yeah, it was a 90 second PB” – Uttered by every Miler.
