John Foley defied our esteemed handicapper to complete a second consecutive handicap victory in perfect conditions on 20th May. After taking out the 3km event as a newcomer in March he was duly given a much tougher mark for the 5km. But a swift scratch time of 18.08 (the fastest of the day) was more than enough for line honours.

As for the minor places, Nick ‘Fitter’ Turner (18.19 scratch time) caught last year’s winner Anne Martin (21.42) just before the finish to extend his lead over her at the top of the overall championship standings. Bruce Davie is currently third.

The next events are the quirky ‘Killer Loop’ handicap at the tan on 22 July (tough but fun) followed by the AV 10km at Albert Park (a scratch event) five days later.
